We recently bought a new wire cage for our dwarf hamster which is more open than the other cage. We have noticed that she never uses one of the corners of the cage for her toilet like she did before, she now goes in her house we have noticed on cleaning the cage. Could it be because there is no hiding place to go to. I have thought about getting a second house to see if she uses that instead. Any help is greatly appreciated

hamsters once they get used to there new cage, will start going to the bathroom in one spot. They kinda sniff to were it is soiled. next time you clean the cage clean out her house but keep a little of the soiled bedding and move it to a place were you want her to pee. It sometimes works and sometimes doesnt.
hope it works for you!
I bet she's not flushing either huh?
Yeah, my hamster did the same thing, it went in the house more often than anywhere else. It was a real mess, and the only way we could fix it was by moving him into a glass aquarium with wood chips for the floor. Then he used the rest of the floor again.
Hi John,
Your hamster is just weeing where she feels safe and secure as its a new cage, my hamster used to wee in his bed, but for the last 8 months or so he now wee's just outside the bedroom area, so dont worry, it is common for hamsters to wee very close to where they sleep. Its lazyness more than anything aswell!!
Make sure for now that you are doing a quick clean up of the bedding area each day. Dont move her into another cage like an aquarium. They are so restricting, and i personally think, a little cruel. She will get used to the cage, and will enjoy it as the wire will allow her to climb, see, and have fresh air ventilating around her all the time, unlike aquariums.
you can buy hamster litter that you can put in a corner or where ever you want your hamster to go to the toilet. There is something about the smell that makes them want to go there
Some hamsters are just different and there is nothing that you can do about it..my hamster uses the wheel as a potty!!
Hope I answered your question!!
Well she could want privacy so thats why she goes in her house. Made a change in her surroundings might have effect her and what she is a custom to. So I would try another house just to see if she choose one over the other.Good luck
What do you think - that hamsters are shy? They pee and poop where they like but it is strange that she is using the house. Get her another one by all means since she seems to fancy using that one as bathroom. They like keeping their food and toilet separate.
