Hamster Problems...Help!?

Please can you help me by answering the following questions!!??!!?
1. What is the best type of cagefor a Syrian hamster to be pregnant and to raise them for a month?
2. I live in the UK, Wolverhampton. Where can I get a good cage.
3. I already have a cage for my present hamster, Sally. Would it matter that hen she dies, I use that cage for another hamster - With a good scrub first!!
4. Can I keep two hamsters in the same room, but in different cages because they are Syrians? [I'm thinking about them picking up eachother's smell!]
5. Do you think that selling around 12 hamsters in an animal-loving, friendly village would be easy enough?
Thanks, luv emeita xxx
Answers:
1. The best type of cage for any hamster is a wire cage with a metal bottom, they chew through plastic...
For a pregnant hamster, you will need to give her nesting materials: some people give them cotton and hay, and give her a place where she can crawl inside to have her babies away from watching eyes...
(Glass tanks are terrible cages, they have no ventilation and can cause a lot of problems)
2. I'm not sure about where to get a cage in the UK...I dont know what kind of pet shops you have there, but you can find hundreds of cages online, I suggest searching to find a good priced one and seeing if they can send it to you...
3. If Sally dies, you can use the cage for another hamster, just make sure you wash it out with bleach, rinse it out very well, and it helps if you sit it out in the sun for a day after you bleach it...
Bleach kills all the germs, the sun kills the bleach...
4. Yes you can keep two hamsters in the same room, if you have one right now, clean out the cage and if possible give her a small bath...either in the sink/tub or by using a spray shampoo for small animals...that will get rid of her smell...and you put the new one into a clean cage so there's no scent, it helps if you bathe the new one two...
Then they will pick up the same odors from the surroundings...
5. Selling small animals is tough...People only want them from certified breeders or pet stores...
It depends on who you can find and how much you are charging for them...you'll probably have to give them away rather than sell them.
Hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!!
For a cage, I bought a 10 gallon glass aquarium and purchased a wire mesh lid for it. It's much easier to clean than a wire mesh cage, and they still can't chew through it.
If you want to breed hamsters, you'll need at least two cages so you can let the male and female mate and then put them in separate cages afterwards.
I have no idea if people in your area will purchase animals from you. I got my first hamster for free from a friend who bred them. After he died, I washed out the cage thoroughly and we're now using it for our new hamster that we just adopted on Monday.
First of all, NEVER put a hamster in a wire cage. They will chew it and they can get their heads stuck between the wires and die.
Get a 10 gallon aquarium. You can put all the same toys and they will have more room to run around and do all the things that hamsters do.
Well I have three hamsters and they are in bin cages. Bin cages are made from rubbermaid bins. They are easy to make, easy to clean and inexpencive.
Here is one example: http://www.geocities.com/calhamassoc/fea...
search Hamster bin cage on line and you will get step by step instructions.
regarding the rest of your questions... please visit Hamster Hideout... it's a great website and fourm where you will learn alot about the hams you have.

the best cage would be one kind of small so the mother cant go too far and leave her babies when they are born and so you can check on them easily. i had two gerbils living together with tow dwarf hamsters but they picked up the scent and started to fight eventually we had to separate them
My syrain ham had 12 babies in a normal sized cage with two levels. I got my cages from pets at home and Wilkinsons. Yes can re use cage just give it a gd clean. Yes I keep mum and dad next to eachother in different cages and they love it! I managed to sell 8 privately. I would advise you to find a gd pet shop as back up as they have to be separated by 6 wks. It was a wicked experience to have so many, and they were so entertaining! Hard work though! x
Em,
I'm aware of your problems with Sally and if she should pass, you can reuse her cage. Be sure and scrub it with very hot water and something like baking soda. Using any chemicals is not recommended for any cages intended for babies to be in. The trace amount of fumes is dangerous for their growing lungs and may cause early death or other lung problems.
You would be surprised how hard it may end up being to find homes for even 1 hamster if no one wants any. Best bet is like I have recommended to you in other answers, is to not breed them at all. Secondly, you can't house 2 Syrians together, even mating pairs for the female will end up harming the male and the male will kill most or all the babies. Now it's personal preference as to keep them in the same room or not. My adult son has 13 cages of Syrians in his room, both males and females. The females however drive him crazy with chewing when in heat. They could smell a male 10 rooms over with their sense of smell. If you read you other questions and my answers, you'll find out what I said on cages.
i would get a cage that doesn't have different levels or tunnels in case the babies get stuck or fall when they start moving round so the bin cages you asked about would be fine.
try car boot sales for second hand cages i sold 3 this year!cheap on car boot cos my kids have grown up now and have guinea pigs.
you can use you old cage just use some good disinfectant.we reused cages after good clean no problems.make sure a baby hamster cant escape the cage though.
yes you can have hamsters in same room different cages.look in pet store they have cages full of hamsters and they are fine.
you should be able to sell hamsters easily enough especially if you have a sleep over and let your friends carefully and quietly look at the babies.don't let them pick them up though or make noise.then wait till your Friends go home and pester their parents for a cute hamster.pet stores will buy them but wont give you as much money but may swap for food etc instead.
dont use cotton wool for bedding it cuts feet off the young if they get their feet stuck in it and the hamster may stuff it in her pouch and choke.also why bath an hamster?it wont smell so don't bath it. it will be ok.just a point.i had mice like i told you before,i ended up with 44 because they were the FEW i couldnt bear to part with.are you like me and will you end up keeping all the cute ones lol.??
I would get a crittertrail cage, and yes you can reuse old one if you clean it good, and use super shavin's for the bedding. yes i keep 3 syrians in separate cages in my bedromm, and move them to dining room table so I can sleep it dosn't bother them in the least, they run around in their exercise balls on the floor together.
