Hamster question?

can you put more than one hamster in a cage if so what kinds, how big of a cage do i need, and should i put two males together or two femails together?
Answers:
The larger Syrian (Golden, Teddybears, etc) should be kept alone unless your planning on breeding and even then only till the female is pregnant! They live alone in the wild so don't live well in groups.
On the other hand the Dwarf (Russian, Chinese etc) live in large very social colonies and really should be kept together. The males will even help raise the babies. I've seen males carry babies out of the nest, much to the mom's displeasure, and try to nurse them.
BUT the reason they do this is that females are only in season for a few hours right after they give birth! So male helpers have a motive for helping they there to make more babies!!
Be aware that even though you may keep males and females apart you can STILL have babies! Female dwarf hamsters can delay implantation of fertilized eggs. So one day you make have 1 adult female but the next BABIES!! Cute little buggers too! Smaller than a corn kernel!
As for the cage... get bigger than you need. That way you will have room for them to explore! You should try the library for info you prolly will need to read ti!
Good luck!
you could put two hamsters in one cage but it wouldn't be the best, but if you do you should putt the same genders together, you know so they wont have any babies
I'm not sure about Russian hamsters, but Syrian hamsters should be kept on their own or they will fight or breed and try to kill each other. Syrian hamsters are larger than Russian hamsters.
Females tend to fight more than males. 2 males will usually get along better.
Buy Decon and put it in the cage.
in my personal opinion I wouldn't put more than one hamster together. dwarf hamsters can sometimes be put together and can live perfectly fine but sometimes they will fight and you will have to seperate them. If you do decide that you want two dwarf hamsters or two russian hamsters buy them at the exact same time from the same habitat. Buy a cage that's big enough for them to roam around in and seperate from each other. I honestly think you should get one hamster unless you can afford to buy another cage in case they start to fight.
A regular hamster cage with lots of attatchments and two weels would be fine for 2 hamsters. Don't buy diff hamsters from diff litters, if you really want 2 get 2 that are already housed together at the pet store.
yes
Putting two hamsters of the same gender can be really dangerous unless they've grown up in the same cage or have been properly introduced. To introduce any pet try rubbing the scent of the new resident on a cloth or something and rub it on your the resident pet. After you take these steps try putting their two cages together, each covered with a blanket. After these two steps have gone well try removing the blanket and seeing the reaction. Make sure you take your time with this process and if it doesn't work it doesn't work. I hope i helped!
i wouldent put eny hampsters together cause males r very territorial and females fight too.and if u mix um ull wake up to about 10 babies.but if u had to i would put 2 females.i dont think that would b good eather but if u had too thats wat i wood do.u should get a double deck 1 they call them duplexes.teddy bear hampsters r very mellow and nice
I would only put two females together (i had two rats once and one ate the other and all we found was his skull) unless you want babies, just mix any kind of female hamsters.
Okay. You can put more than one hamster in a cage together, however, I would only recommend two. However, the hamsters MUST be from the same litter, or else they will fight. You can put either two females or males, whichever you prefer.
only dwarfs can live together, not the syrians, get a crittertrail cage at petsmart. if you don't want babies, get two of the same sex dwarfs, but i would just get one syrian, they are friendlier than the others and are solitary hamsters by nature.
