If you get two, they will most likely fight unless you seperate them into two different cages. Hamsters can be really vicious with their cage mates, so please be cautious. I would suggest going to your local animal shelter or petstore and holding each kind that you are considering adopting. Then you can get a feel for their personality.
Good luck with the new pet!
if you get 2, they have 2 be in different cages, they willfight..be careful also, because you may also accidently get a pregnant hamster...If you cant decide on the type of hamster 2 get ^_^ get 1 of each..its the best of both worlds then
Firstly, a teddy bear hamster is a syrian hamster. Its just a cute nickname for syrian hamsters. Secondly, if you are getting 2, you will need 2 cages. They are solitary animals which mean they have to be housed seperatly. If paird together, once they reach adulthood they will fight to the death! You have been warned! the smaller breeds, dwarf, chinese, and russian hamster can live in pairs, but the syrian/teddybear hamsters cant!
I live in England and our hamster (who is also a syrian/teddybear) cost 拢6, which in america will be around $10. They make wonderful pets, and the syrian breed tend to be the tamest, most sociable and more laid back breed. But I cant warn you enough, dont house 2 adult hamsters together.
Like catzi said, they have to be in seperate cages or they might kill each other...
Dwarf hamsters are waaaay cuter (I have one )
If you're getting a dwarf hamster, (or any hamster ) the basic things you need are :
-the cage
-hamster food, food bowl and water bowl
-dust bath (that's only for the dwarf hamster, so they can clean their fur )
-a ball and/or a wheel (if possible, get both, so your hamster can run around your room)
What you can't give a hamster :
-sweets or fried food
-appartment plants
-you can give them carrots, a piece of apple, or certain vegetables, as long as they are carefully washed, and are not coming straight from the fridge.
You should change their water every day, and change their litter every week. Their water should be fresh. As for the treats, you can buy some at PJ's pet shop, to add flavour to their food.
Another thing you can buy them, for their teeth are wood chews. You can get them really cheap at PJ's pet shop...It 's good for them. because their teeth never stop growing throughout their life...
You can also give them cotton balls. I give some to mine, he tears it with his teeth and claws and uses it as a nest...
When you get your new hammie, be sure to leave him one week to get used to his cage before touching him, then put a treat in your hand and let him come to you.
Syrian hamsters are the bigger hamsters, it refers to all of them.Teddy bear is a type of syrian...There are black bears and honey bears, but they are both one of the best types of syrian hamsters...
You also tend to get good hamsters from Dalmations, Calicos and Tortoise Shells...
I've hade the best luck with tortoise shells...
With syrian hamsters, like the people above me said, you cannot put 2 in one cage...they will not get along...even if they are from the same litter...
If you get 2 you will have to get 2 cages also...
PetSmart would be the better store to go to...they only keep one sex of small animals, that way you cannot get a pregnant one...they also carry many more breeds than PetCo does...as for price...it depends on what you get...
All of the hamsters I mentioned above are $20 a peice...
There are long and short haired syrians that go for $8 and $10, but they are much more agressive...
If you want 2 hamsters, you have to get 2 dwarfs from the same litter...and for whatever reason, males usually get along more than females...but dwarfs are definantly not very people friendly!
To choose which one you want..go to a PetSmart and ask the associates to hold some of them, too see what you like and dont like, just keep in mind, they will get friendlier after you take them home, because no one really handles them in the store...
I hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!
syrian 10-20 at petsmart, cages are 30-35 , food is $6.00, and use super shavin's by cozy critter, its the best and low on oils so they don't get respiratory disease, but any syrians are a good bye. i like the blackbears and the short hairs, and i have one longhaired.
you should get 2 rats.
