Answers:
A lot of hamsters get bald spots, especially from trying to escape. He most likely just rubbed the area on a part of the cage when he was trying to get out.
If it is red and looks swollen, take the wood shavings out of the cage and put him on paper towels for a few days.
Once a day, put neosporin on the area, just a tiny dap and rub it on (it's easiest to do with a Q-Tip). Once the redness and swelling goes away, you can put him back on the wood chips...
Also, make sure the chips are Aspen, NO PINE AND NO CEDAR, these can be toxic to small animals.
If you still want to take him to a vet, it depends on each individual vet how much it will cost. Some will only charge you for a walk-in, which is usually around $20-30, other will charge you for a full check-up, which is usually around $40-50 but can be up to $90-100. All you can do is call around and ask.
I hope this helps..GOOD LUCK!!
It could be that he scratched himself. Once I thought my hamster was bald or had a cut, but he just scratched himself and his fur folded that way when he slept. If it really bothers you, go see a vet. My brother's former hamster had a cancer growth and it looked like a big bald lump.
