well my gerbil is obviously sick, and i'm going to try explaining the symptoms.
he has been sleeping wayy way more than usual. he seems pretty lethargic, but he still is eating and drinking. whenever i use to pick him up he would try to scurry away. but these past few days i've noticed he just lets me pick him up. its weird.
his cagemate will scratch and dig in the corners, but all he does is sleep. i havent seen him active at all today or yesterday.
his coat, i noticed, is puffing up and getting messy. and you know how normally you can barely see gerbils breathing? well now he's breathing pretty a lot harder. :-[
i read online about symptoms of illnesses for gerbils, and i believe he has a resperatory infection. can anyone confirm this?
or has anything similar happened to your pet?

He is pretty old. It could be his time has come. If it's a respiratory infection you should be able to hear clicking in his lungs when you hold him near your ear. But even with treatment he may not survive because of his age.
I'd have a vet check it out, gerbils normal get slow when they are sick or near death, I would take it to a vet.
it might be wettail. take him out of the same cage with the other gebil asap. and take him to the vet.
my hamster had something like that but later something was starting to come out her eye and she was barely breathing at all and she died soon after
i'm sorry he/she is sick!
you need to take it to the vet!
I have a hamster and she got that way when her wheel broke. I got her a bigger area and a new wheel and she perked up and was back to her normal self. When i put a new hamster in with her the new one hogged the water and the old one got dehidrated and weak - so i'd suggest give them more room and they like to be solitary
Hmmmmm, well it could be just because you gerbil is getting old and more tired. It's sad that you can't afford to take him to the vet, but there may be a way you can check for illness yourself. If any of the following is true he may be sick:
-his fur has bald patches
-his eyes aren't clear, or glazed over
-his poop is er.welll...ya know...not quite solid?
He also may have been hurt and is in alot of pain. Does he limp at all? Are his feet always facing the right way? Has his tail been cut off?
Other then checking for those things there's not much else you can do if you can't take him to the vet :(...sorry I can't be of more help!
*hope he get's better!!*
