Hamsters??

alrighty, here's the ththing...i'm thinking about getting two hamsters. the problem is i don't know if there are any health risks(like do they have certain diseases or something)...are there? also i was wondering if there is a high possibility of them getting loose because i don't think finding dead rodents is anyones idea of fun. so if you're just randomly guessing...thanks but no thanks...and if u just want twoo friggin points, don't pretend like you have any answers, just say hi or something. so yeah please help...i plan on getting them on friday or saturday!
p.s. if ur wondering why i dont just look it up...its cuz im lazy

Two hamsters are always great, Make sure you get a nice sized cage. One downfall is that they smell sometimes, Cleaning the cage helps but it's just them. I myself had one and it smelled and we cleaned it about once a day. They will not escape unless you leave the top open which I don't see why you would. They aren't that fast and you can have them on your bed or whatever if you'd like. Just keep an eye on them. I work at PetSmart and I recommend getting one for awhile, and if all is well go for another. They are fairly cheap and easy to care for, aside from the task of cleaning the cage but all that really is, is changing wood chips or whatever you use for the bottom. They don't really carry anything disease related unless you do something to them, which is highly unlikely. They are very hardy and can live through a lot. Sometimes they are shy though and dont like to be held often or by strangers.
Hope this helped, I loved my hamster named Lucy. Lasted awhile. Very cute and friendly.
Take care!
just ask the people who work in the store your going to buy it from. im sure they will know
But still had the time to type this? wow.
If you are lazy then you shouldn't get a hamster. Their cages need to cleaned every week or they will reek. There really aren't health risk with them...You're local pet store isn't going to sell their clients something that has the potential to harm them, that reputation would close the business down.
As long as you have a secure cage for them, they shouldn't get lose. You just have to be responsible enough to keep the lid on it.
I'm not sure about disease however, i purchased 2 hamsters and within a couple months she had her first litter of 12, it was awful and she chased the male out, she will kill a male if she can't get it out of cage/aquarium. Also, i read to feed her regular milk during her pregnancy, otherwise nursing becomes overwhelming (pain in nipples) and she may kill her babies. It was pretty cool to watch her care for them, but once they grew it was to much to care for. Like I said, not sure about disease but those babies do mulutiply!!
If they are Syrians then you shouldn't get 2 because they are solitary! They will MURDER each other!!
If they are Dwarves then they aren't an escape risk!
:)
Get a nerd instead. They don't have any diseases (except acne) and they won't ever escape if you give them plenty of car magazines and math homework. Just to make them more hamster-like you can get them a giant treadmill thingie that they can run in place on for hours at a time to keep themselves entertained while they recite Shakespeare soliloquies.
Well i bought a hampster and i hated it. It somehow got loose and was chewing up everything. We couldnt find it. If you keep the cage clean you will be fine for any diseases. They will stink if you neglect cleaning the cage.
Well...I find...if they are already dead...it's a tastey treat. And if you are planning on eating them like chicken nuggets(high in fiber by the way) they aren't poisonus. But if you plan on keeping them as a pet they will deficate little cancer balls as I would like to call them. Be careful!

Before you buy the hamsters, find out something about them!
Here's some links to click on, and the pet stores have books on how to care for them.

if u get em' from the pet store then they should be fine health-wise. i had hamsters growing up and got 1 now and as far as i kno they never had diseases. they only get out the cage if u leave the cage door open, so make sure u close it, and dont get the cage that u can pull out the tray to clean it, because i had two hamsters that used to push the tray out and get loose. they was some ghetto hamsters, 4 real. just expect for your hamsters to run in they wheel all nite and sleep all day. make sure you keep the cage clean and feed them all the time that is what keep a healthy hamster. and talk to em 2, they do understand. hope this helped ma'am. good luck!
i don't really know any answers to those questions even though i've had hamsters because i was really little and don't remember, but as far as i know, we never had problems with them getting out or anything. but i do know that if you're going to be lazy and not clean the cage every week, it will stink really really badly.
you didn't really specify about diseases...i've never heard of anyone catching a disease from a hampster.make sure you wash your hands before and after you handle them.before to make sure they don't bite you because you taste like food, and after for sanitary reasons..you need to handle them daily, so they get used to being held and don't get mean.they WILL get loose if you don't have a good cage for them.glass aquariums work well, put a heavy book on top so they can't climb out, trust me, they will try to!! make sure you have a wheel in the cage for them to run, they need exercise and will be a lot less hyper when you hold them...another thing, you can't put more than one hampster in a cage because you will either have many, many hampsters or they will fight and either one of them or both of them will die.make sure you get young hampsters because they usually live 2-3 years on average
If you're too lazy to look up some information on the animal you will be caring for for the next 2-3 years, I wouldn't recommend getting one in the first place. But in case you do decide to care, I wouldn't recommend getting 2 unless they are from the same breed. Hamsters tend to fight other hamsters as they aren't the most social creature. Regarding the possibility of them escaping? It's very likely. However if you make sure the cage you get has no easily opened doors or big differences between the wires (if there are any) then the hamster shouldn't be able to escape, and if they do you can usually find them underneath a couch or dresser.

if you get a SYRIAN HAMSTER,ie teddy bear, honey bear, panda bear, black bear, they live alone! They will kill each other if together in one cage, now the dwarfs can live in pairs, just get them at the same time from the same store, like petsmart or petco. The syrians are friendlier, bigger, easier to handle, and not highstrung like the other types are. and you only need one, and they like people and being handled. be sure to get a good crittertrail cage for it, they were made for them. Also an exercise ball for it to run on the floor.
