Healing Guinea Pig Wounds?

one of my guinea pigs bit the other
how do i heal that??
i know i cant put a bandaid on it
Answers:
I'd say it depends on how bad the bite wound is and where it is. You may want to separate your pigs while the other heals.
Bites on the rump and body will scab over relatively quickly. You'll want to check them daily to be sure they're dry and clean. You can use cotton balls or gauze to clean the wound (clean it with hydrogen peroxide and gently dab it dry). If kept clean, the wound should heal itself fine.
Bites to the ears, eyes and face are a little trickier. Honestly, if they're not that deep, just keep an eye on them and they should heal themselves. You may have to help to keep them dry and clean, but otherwise they should heal on their own. If the wounds are deeper or caused substantial damage, I'd highly recommend taking your pig to a cavy-savvy veterinarian. I recently had to take one of mine to the vet because his cagemate scratched his eye. He gave us antibiotic eye drops - but he had to check to make sure the antibiotics were guinea pig safe, as guinea pigs have sensitive systems and cannot tolerate all medications (i.e. penicillin kills them). I have since had to separate the two pigs.
If the bite resulted in blood, I would seperate them, at least for the time being.
Firstly make an appointment with your vet, even after doing the steps below it is important to check that everything is ok and that there are no infections.
Firstly flush the wound out using luke warm water in a syringe (without the needle), gently press the plunger. After doing this dilute Betadine into a weak tea concentration (40 parts water to one part Betadine), and use to clean the wound out. Betadine is readily available at pharamacies and is safe near eyes. If you do not have Betadine, salt water can be used. For this about a teaspon of common salt to a pint of warm water. There are a few other anteseptic solutions which can be used, but I would recommend Betadine.

If you go down a bit, there are pictures as to the syringes which you should use:

Good Luck!
the same thing happened to one of my guinea pigs. i took him to the vet and they gave me a medication to put on the wound. it healed within 2 weeks.
i think u should bring him/her to the vet.
i use a antiseptic solution on it then use a spesilised tea tree formular on it and the wound seems to heal faster
wash with saline water, it will help to heal it faster and kill germs :)
Good luck :)
Sabby
you leave it. they heal very quickly but keep a close eye on them coz if they start fiting you will have to split them up. if they are both males they will fite alot and possibly kill eachother x
You should either take it to a vet or if you don't want to spend the money then put neosporin and whatever you put on your wounds. When my guinea pig had a wound i went to petco and they had a special first aid kit for rodent there that they used and it healed very soon.

  1. Hi, my name is claire i currently have 3 guinea pigs that are all males. there is muesli, rusty & sock muesli is the youngest and rusty is in the middle and sock is the oldest , sock & rusty have been fighting but it wasn't at all dangerous they would just do the usual chatter their teeth, raise their fur etc and when they came to close to eachother they would just nip but not hard enough to say back off and so they would but very recently sock bit rusty very hard just ide say on or just below his jaw line and he has taken a a small chunk off and when i pull the fur back (Extremely gently) you can see that it's still hanging on but the hole is rather deep well seems to look that way anyway, i know how to clean it and everything like that but i was just wondering will his wound every heal completely and disapear as if it were never there? (I know i shouldn't have kept them together but they only seemed to just nip and then that would be it but since this is the first bite that has caused a wound and to bleed i have seperated rusty from sock and i won't let them together ever again i am buying another cage for sock and i will put it relitively close to rusty & muesli's so that he can still have muesli as his mate and sometimes i put muesli with sock then after an hour or 2 put him back with rusty the smell of sock on meusli doesn't seem to bother rusty btw) just wanted to know if it will heal completely and not scar? thanks for any reply's much appreciated.

  2. Hi again, just updating with what is happening with rusty & his wound, he seems to be fine now just a long scab has covered up the hole and he looks fine, now that the wound has scabbed i just dab some chlorhexidine on it and that's it i do that usually 3 times a day but he seems to be comming along fine as if it never happened., i still would like to know though if there will be a scar there? thanks.
