Hello, ive heard quite a bit that guinea pigs loose on the floor in your house can chew power cables.?

Has anyone got any tips or hints how to reduce this, i will try hiding some under the carpet but this isnt always possible, i will also block off behind my telly but i was just wondering if anyone had ideas on how or what to conceal wires with or any other tips would be very helpful indeed, thanks alot.

Your problem will not be so much with the chewing as with the pooing.
there are tubes you can buy for your wires in most shops i wish i could remember what they are called. Id go to an electrical shop and ask they will know what they are.
Yes they sure do LOVE to chew cables!! Take it from me! Alright- here is what you do: go to your local computer/audio store and purchase corrugated tubing. You place this tubing around the cords, so your little guy cannot chew!
It is a life saver! Literally!
Thats like if a plane knows a rat or squirrel is loose on the plane, it will have to make an Emergency landing, the rodent
could cause the plane to crash.
At Lowes, they have these black, split cable organizers
that you can put over wiring, its cheap, and works.
I dont know what the decor of your house looks like, but try protecting wire by running them through the metal tubes that electricians use. They look like the cord that pay phones have. Actually, its the same thing. you can get them in different sizes. The guinea pig wont be able to chew through it and it looks pretty good (modern and clean), much better then plastic zip ties or something to that effect.
Not the brightest idea 2 have guinea pigs running around indoors! they do get up 2 all sorts! if u have a garden build a run or buy one %26 put them outside 2 eat grass %26 enjoy the sunshine. Lol
put the guinea pigs in a cage
rodents (especially guinea pigs since their mouths are bigger than mice or hamsters) love to chew on things - including the wires! most of them are probably behind your tv and stuff, so you could put something (a tall book, etc) up to block the guinea pig from getting back there.
if you have wires that are more out in the open, you can go to a computer or electronics shop and buy tubing to put around the wires which would be safer if the guinea pig does decide to chew on them as she probably can't chew through those tubes to get to the wiring.
one thing that I did was to go to walmart and they have a small animal play pen for about 10 bucks . Its a good size one and I put my guina in it almost everyday to run around in. If you feel if it is too small you can get two and connect them. I have not had any problem with it all and you dont have to worry about wires or anyhing like that just throw some toys in it and shes set
Well why don't you try masking tape over the wires? I can't gaurantee that they won't attempt to chew the tape, but the won't be able to get to the wires really well. Make sure that you inspect the tape after they run around to see if you need to replace it.
But if you have carpet, then do your best to keep them up on the wall. They have wall mounts that you could buy at your local hardware store to wrap the wires around.
卢OH YES THEY DO! My boyfriends guinea pig Bacon ate right through the charger to his Blue Tooth Headset and and destroyed it. He also chewed through the cord of a fan and I got electrocuted by it. Just make sure ALL power cords are high enough that the guinea pig can't get to it. And remember they can jump too.
PS the Bacon likes the taste of rubber so much now he will even chew on pencil erasers! For a while he preferred that to wood. Oops.
you can get electicle tape and tape them to the wall. i never really had problums
yes they can chew cables and anything else including furniture just like rabbits
yes they can. reameber always 2 keep an eye on ur guinea pig. 1 time my sis took her eyes off of my guinea pig for a second and it was gone. that guinea pig was lost for 2 days! 2 days i tell u, 2 DAYS! u can get plastic tubes for ur power cables and stuff. that way they cant bite and get alectracuted and u wont have 2 worry about the power going out.
Well, you could get some corrugated tubing to put around the wires. That way even if they knaw on that, nothing can happen. What we do is put my pig into the room with the least wires. We have these blue mats so she can't get past them to the wires. We also use regular stuff around the house to prevent her from going to the wires. There is plastic, lots of stuff too strong for them to get past. You could also disconnect the wires and nothing will happen, even if they knaw.
Yes, pigger can chew. Your best bet is as someone has already suggested. Get a pet pen (or 2 or 3) to make a play yard out of. That way they only have access to what you give them access to. You can also get those storage cubes that are made out of grids and zip tie them together to make a corral. Mine is 22 panels. They are 14 inches wide. I usually set it up 7 grids long and 4 grids wide. This means they have about 36 sq ft to play in.
Another thing you can do with the grids is build them a wonderfully large cage. Go to guineapigcages.com to find out how. We have many members there from the UK. You might even find one of your neighbors!
Also see guinealinx.com for any health questions you may have.
Good luck with your little guy.
yeah, so do my boyfriends dogs. try a newspaper
Make sure you are supervising them if there is anything that could pose a risk to them (other animals, risk of escape, opening/closing doors, etc.). You can buy a small animal playpen that you can take apart to block off areas you don't want them to have access to, such as an electrical appliance with visible wires- these pens can be bought from Pets At Home or you can buy them online, I bought one on eBay recently. Alternatively take a look at guineapigcages.com - not only does it offer great ideas for permanent cages but if you can get hold of these grids then you can make a pen to fence off part of your room for floor time with the pigs. Good luck.
my guinea pig has been known to chew my phone charger! you just have to watch them.. i usually put my piggys on the kitchen floor where there is nothing in sight to be chewed! never leave your piggy on his own in a room... not that i dont think u would but some people probably would!
DIY stores will sell cables boxes .. there just plastic strips which you fit your wires into.. (im pretty sure argos sells them)
hope this helps =)
Guinea pigs do chew cables but that is not the only reason they should not be let loose. If they find a gap they can squeeze through, get themselves stuck, panic and die from stress. They should never be left loose unsupervised after all they easy get themselves stood on or stuck in doors.
Best idea is to make a collapsible pen and place sheets on the floor within the pen or they will ruin the carpet lol. Also this means you can leave them for a while so you could use the pen if you need to clean the cage out for example. Next best is a room with no gaps and a lino floor. We use our kitchen because there is nowhere for ours to run behind.
Next best you could use the cage top as a pen. Last you could train them to walk on a harness and lead and sit there and go with them so they can explore relatively freely. Ours does this too but we only use that for outdoors. She likes going skateboarding hehe
they will chew cables and wires.you can put them in tubes just keep an eye on them cause they will chew them also
Unfortunately our little furry friends like to eat EVERYTHING!! Carpet is also another delicacy for them! Maybe if you put something that they dont like the smell of on the cables? Maybe try a perfume?? The plastic on the cables is actually very dangerous to them (as for you, bec they are in reality, tryin to kill you by causing a fire!!), as the plastic isnt digested by them and can bock their gut!
