Answers:
Yes she is too young!
If you help her take care of the little hamster, then it's fine for her to "have" one. It'd probably be good for her to learn how to take care of the pet and to learn about responsibility, even at such a young age, but only if you have the time. If not, then just let her play with yours because she can't take care of it by herself and should be watched while handling the hamster.
Four year olds are not responsible enough to take care of hamsters. Goldfish are more suitable as a first pet. Your sister will most likely harm the hamster by accident, from rough handling. You should wait until she is at least 8 before introducing rodents for her to solely look after.
In the meantime, you can slowly introduce little creatures and teach her how to hold them carefully and gently. Keep in mind she will probably freak if they start to squirm and get away or bite.
I would let her have a hamster but I would recommend her not to be allowed to take out the hamster unless there is supervision (either you or a parent) she may not like this rule but it is safer so a hamster doesnt get lost or even worse stepped on! I think she is a little young but if she doesnt do much to it without supervision she should be fine...
also if you decide she is to young get her a gold fish or a beta!
Why not? Once it's old enough, I see no problem. You obviously know how to care for them, so you can help her learn to care for hers, right? My four year old has been raised with all kinds of pets and animals, inside and outside. He had a hamster when he was three, took very good care of it. It died because the pet store told us cedar was ok, and of course we found out it causes respiratory issues. We just never got another one. Right now, he has a guinea pig and a turtle in his room. He takes care of the turtle himself, and I help him feed and water the guinea pig. He also helps me with the horses, goats, everything in the barn, and he feeds and waters the ferrets and helps me feed and water the birds. Takes care of the chickens by himself. Help her learn responsibility. As long as you're there to show her, she should do just fine :-) It will be a great experience for both of you.
i would not because she could hurt the baby and i think she is to young. But you can help her take care of the hamster and always makesure she is always sitting on the floor with the hamster. SHE SHOULD ALWAYS BE SUPERVISED WHEN WITH HAMSTER!!
Good luck!!!!
You've gotten some pretty good suggestions so far. I'd just like to add, having raised bettas, goldfish, and hamsters before, that neither of them are "easy" pets that should be tossed carelessly into the hands of a 4 year old. Kids that young should be monitored and taught about responsibility. Even though she may not be able to own one, let her get involved with the hamster by filling it's food bowl and refilling the water bottle every once in a while.
Let her think it is hers but you take care of it
When i was four i had a pet mouse. if i were you i would let her have the hamster, but have her keep it in a public place like your kitchen, so that way she can have the fun of owning a pet, and you can make sure she is not doing the criter harm. In adtion if you do this, make sure you constantly inforce cleening the cage, feeding and caring for the pet, so she will know what shes getting herself into in the future
no. as soon as you give it to her she may play with her non-stop. the hamster is only a baby and will die soon like that. it is ok for her to play with it for a while and make sure she doesn't play too rough. or it would be ...umm..not very nice...like...death. sorry. :(
I think 4 is to young to have the big responsibility of owning and taking care of a hamster, or any animal for that matter. I think you should keep on taking care of them yourself until she is a little older, but in the meantime let her hold the one she likes and pet it, I'm sure she will be happy enough with that!
Good luck!
she is to young to care for it by herself but you could tell her that it is her hamster and you are going to help her look after it. we have three male rats and the youngest one belongs to my two year old son. he fell in love with him at the pet store so he came home to join my boys. as long as she has some one to help her it's a good way for her to learn responsibility.
