My male syberian Hamster is about 8 months old and quite big , but the query is he keeps rubbing himself against the bars of the cage or his house. And tries to squash himself into really tight spaces even though he won't fit! Any ideas? Or is this normal!
I'd be grateful for some help. Thanks everyone. x

My teddy bear hamster does the same thing, she is a very big girl, but she just doesn't know it. She will try and fit in the smallest little spaces, but she is just far to big. I had to buy her a bigger cage, but thats just because the cage she was originally in was for a dwarf hamster. But yeah, try the toilet paper or paper towel rolls, just watch to make sure he doesn't eat to much of the roll. And you can try getting a small box, big enough for him to fit in. And cut the bottom out and a hole for him to get into it and turn it upside down in his cage. It will give him somehting bigger and studier to sleep and play in... Good luck with your hamster.
Our big pet store (Wilsons - are they a chain?) have shelves of things for different hamsters and warnings not to use some for Syberians, I guess because they grow so big.
Lots of playthings and hidey-hole gizmoes. Perhaps a treat for his birthday.
Hamsters are burrowing animals, you should get tubes for him, loo roll tubes, kitchen towel tubes, any kind of cardboard tube which the hamster can also nibble on. And cut holes into small cardboard boxes (not ones that have been stapled) for him to climb in and out of. They're busy little animals and like to be active. Always use cardboard though, if he gets stuck you can cut him out!
it is normal.hamsters tend to hide themselves in dark places.try adding tubes in their cage.or just use the center carton of a tissue roll.or try adding a few more inches of bedding.they will use the bedding to cover themselves in such a way that they would be away from light.
He is leaving his scent to prove its his. every time you clea the cage he will do this. goive him some toys and toliet roll tubes 2 play with
thats very unusual my hamsters have never done anything like that but when my serian was running around he managed to squeeze under the door u might think he cant fit but u will be amazed i would say its weird but everyones different but if stil not sure take him to the vets goodluck
Your Hamster could have some sort of mite, and he is trying to relieve the uncomfortable itching, by rubbing himself against the bars of his cage. Or he could be bored. By giving him a wheel inside the cage, he will run around on it and it will relieve boredom, as will toys too. If he continues to rub himself against the bars of his cage, then I would try bathing him in lukewarm water, with a special anti-mite wash bought from a pet shop. If he doesn't stop the behaviour, then I would recommend a trip to the vet.
I think it is normal my son's hamster used to do that I wouldn't worry about it.
Yes this is normal because hamsters like to hide in tight places.
But,you can put it a cage with just
the hamster wheel and exercise it every once in a while.
Keep in mind that hamster do like to hide in small, tight, dark places...so yes it is normal for your hamster to go in the small tubes, im sure it wouldnt go in if it couldnt get out lol.
I hope this helps you out!
Have fun!
My Syrian hamster does this to! He does that a lot but he stops after a while! It is normal!
it's mormal.he just wants to find differnt ways to get where he wants to go.dont worry it is normal
good luck!
It's normal, my hamster like to scatch herself on the bars of her cage-she also squeeze into small spaces
Yes, all hamsters love trying to escape from everywhere and exploring. Including small spaces.
I think it is normal because one of the attitudes of a hamster is that they loooooooove to go through holes, tunnels and stuff like that. He is rubbing the cage probably because it feels a little uncomfortable at the moment.
My fatty of a hamster does this she just won't learn lol!
It won't matter though and it's perfectly normal!
Get a bigger cag, sounds like the hammies bored.
Do some research on google it will tell you the same :-)
