Hamsters usually get used to be with other hamsters in pet stores and when they're bought they're pretty nervous in a new home and with someone trying to grab them (although some may be more aggressive or tamer, depending on the hamster). First of all, you should use a pacient approach, first by starting to stroke him calmly so it gets used to human touch. Touching it when it has just awakened usually makes it stay more calm (compared to if you grab it when it's pretty active, exercising or eating). Using gloves to grab the hamster really helps, because generally if it bites you and you jump or throw it, it just makes it act more aggressive when it's in your hands. With time, it should be tamer. Also, lack of proteins may cause aggressiveness in hamsters, especially in females, so maybe you could also explore that side.
Referring to the diet issue, you should apply a time diet, not a reduction diet. Offer your hamster food at certain times (when it is awake) and when it is finished taking some withdraw the food. Leaving food for the hamster all day long will make it want to store it and take it to its special storage place, where it will eat as much as it wants. Giving food in an orderly fashion makes the hamster grab only the necessary food. However, make sure your hamster is truly fat and not just fluffy or big, because size may vary. I hope this is helpful.
well if he bites u maybe u should ask at a pet store. and if it can't fit in the cage it might just be a bigger hamster they come in all sizes. get a new cage.
as to biting, keep handling it and lightly tap its nose each time it bites. if it figures out you won't handle it when it bites, then you will never be able to handle it. As to diet, feed it less food per feeding time. there is a chance it is pregnant so be prepared.
As for the biting, yours must be quite young and not handled much before you got it. You can put on a pair of thinner winter gloves and hold it this way. Hamsters know if you are nervous about them and this in turn makes them nervous about you too causing the biting. We specialize in taming biting small animals with my adult son being the main tamer. It sometimes takes him anywhere from a week to a few months to tame a hamster. He uses the gloves, offers treats to them, he talks softly and never hits them only verbally scolds them for biting (like saying "no bite"). Also never throw your hamster when it bites this will cause injury. I know people don't intend to do this, but with a sudden, sharp, painful bite this can happen.
First to gain confidence in yourself and the hamster in you start with offering a treat before attempting to pick it up, this can even be a piece of food. Never pick up a sleeping hamster, this is almost an automatic nip/bite to you. Second hold it in the cage to start with in case it jumps or bite you so you can let it go where it won't get hurt. Try sanitizing your hands with a hand sanitizer like Purell to remove all food scents (food scents cause biting too.). Provide a toilet paper roll for chewing (this can also be used to coax the hamster into before picking it up. Hamsters can be quite territorial of their cages and will also bite for this reason.
We have partially blind and now deaf dwarf hamster that just recently began biting and that's when we discovered her deafness. If you don't tap on the cage she will bite you from fear of being picked up suddenly where she can't hear or see on her right side. Now we tap the cage and try to approach her from her left side only.
You must be talking a Syrian hamster (large breed) if it's too big for the tubes. First of all it needs no diet to be put on. The tubes made are for young hamsters or dwarf hamster, not a full grown Syrian. Do away with the tubes and you need to take the cage back (if possible) and get a cage without tubes, like a milti-story wire top/plastic bottom cage. A 2 story like I'm talking about is about $25-$30 at most pet stores. All wheels that come with any cage should be replaced with a 8"-10" diameter wheel, ones that come with the cages are just too small for a full grown Syrian hamster and will cause back problems with them.
The sites below have examples of the multi-story cages I mentioned and this company has free shipping for orders over $39 unless it's a bulk/large item, then you're charged a bulk/large item shipping fee. I use about 30 of these cages with my small animal rescue and I really like them.
the hamster is just scared. you have to wash your hands so you dont smell of food then talk quietly him as he needs to know your voice. if hes a dwarf scoop him up with both hands and hold gim over a box and if ur really stuck you can lift him by the scruff of the neck!!

Sounds like you have fully grown syrian ( teddybear) hamster if he is having trouble getting up the tubes im afraid, which also means you may have trouble taming him as he clearly is'nt a baby.
Firstly hamsters dont diet. Just feed him healthy and dont feed him human junk food. A Normal hamster mix, small portions of frsh fruit and veg ( consult a good hamster book for this as hamsters are very sensitive to some food ) and give him plenty of exercise outside of the cage in a exercise ball ( and this will help you tame him at the same time)
As for the cage, its got to go. Get him a large cage with lots of space to run around, climb on the bars, and has lots of ventilation. Make sure he has his wheel for exercise and a seperate nesting area for him to create his bed. Make sure he has fresh food and water on a daily bases and that the cage is thouroughly cleaned and disinfected at least once a week. Hamsters catch infections very easily and die. Clean, large cage equals a happy, healthy hamster.
As for taming... Time and patience. Hamsters are not domesticated like cats and dogs, they are wild. But the only hamsters who really do bite are ones that are scared and not being handeled properly.
first tip. Hamsters have poor eyesight. They rely on Smell and Sound. We have had our syrian hamster a year, and he responds to his name like a dog would. Dont feel disheartend that he is nipping you at the moment, I promise they do make brilliant pets.
So start by saying his name all the time when he is awake, he has to get used to your voice. Also, let him smell you. Dont pick him up, but lay your hand flat, or in a fist. He will not bite you. He will have a sniff out of curiosity. He knows your scent now. Next bribe him! offer him a piece of food from your hand, Hamster yogurt drops, and monkey nuts go down well with my fat fur ball, and also bananas, brocolli, peas, sweetcorn and mushrooms are a winner. Let him come to you, and after a week or so, gently take him out of the cage and let him have a run in his exercise ball, he will love it!
Just remember, hamsters are nocternal, and sleep all day, and play all night, so dont wake him. Hamsters are grumpy when woken and will bite if your not careful. Have fun!
to stop your hamster from biting be very patient and make the hamster know you better
try to pet it with your pinky finger and show him you love him and pet him. put your hand under his legs and gently pick him up very very slowly. if he lets you pick him up, pet him softly with your thumb and make a little cave for him with both of your hands and he will feel comfortable. don't show fear! never act scared and they will have more confidence. to put him on a diet feed him a little bit of hamster food and more fruits and vegetables like carrots unsalted sunflowers seeds and more. and in like a month he will get skinnier.
a one of way to make your hammy stop bitting is put on a glove so he gets comfertable in your hand and then after he stops trying to bite you take the glove off, i suggest getting a new cage for the tube problem. sell your old cage to some one so you dont have a empty cage around. if you do decide to sell the cage please send me a picture of it and a price on it. i have 8 dwarf hamsters and probably need another cage at duffin_501@yahoo.com
Your new friend will get use to you. Just keep walking up to the cage and talk to it in soft voice, after you do that daily for a couple weeks. You should be able to pick It up.But remember start with small amount of times (only hold for 20 or 30 sec at first then gradually increase) Oh and once hes use to you buy him an exercise ball to help him lose wight. Trust me had same problem with my hamster Bob.
HAHAHAHAHA!! Ok, my hamster was a chubster too. Just go to your local pet store and ask for their healthiest hamster chow. As for the biting thing, I haven't the slightest...
the diet thing, just give him ONLY clovers and those white flower weed things, they love them and they r really healthy. 4 the biting thing, put him in a closed in sapce, and keep petting him, he will get used to ur scent soon after that.
