I just left the pet store with my daughter who wants a hamster for her birtday. We looked at gerbils and hamsters, but there was another small critter that looked like a hamstre, but it had a long tail with a bit of fluff at the end. Does anyone know what this is? I guess I can ask the people at the pet store; figured I'd ask here firts.

how big was it? I am guessing it was a Degus. These guys are great pets, not nocturnal and very lovable. Once they create a bond with you, they want to spend every waking moment with you. You can put them on you shoulder and walk around with it. They are great.

or it could have been a gerbil, but you said you already looked at those.

possibly a sugar glider. Well, now that I look at them, maybe not.

it could be a small gerbil. did it have a sign at the cage? some stores do that.
The rodent with the long tail was a Gerbil... Did it jump like a kangaroo or stand on two feet? Or it was a a Chinchilla , but my guess is that it is a gerbil... they have long tails and fluff at the end.
ask the petstore employees.
